This session will discuss the principles governing systems performance when designing and trouble-shooting systems and their associated infrastructure.

There are a wide range of issues to be considered, especially those affecting throughput, response times, scalability and availability. Performance is not something that can always be dealt with by system tuning or simply buying bigger hardware. Performance issues frequently result in systems failing in some form or other, which affects availability and causes disruption to service. Understanding the characteristics that govern performance helps us to design and implement better systems.

Speaker Biography

Colin is a consulting engineer who specialises in leading the design and implementation of mission-critical and disaster-tolerant systems. He started XDelta Limited in 1996 and works with a wide range of OpenVMS based systems and their surrounding infrastructure. Colin has been responsible for the design and implementation of systems engineering projects in a wide range of industries such as aerospace, power generation, finance, healthcare and transport.

Colin has been involved with the world-wide OpenVMS community for over 30 years and is a well-known speaker with specific interests in availability, performance, security, networking and storage. His background is in large scale systems engineering, including software design and development.

This session will discuss the complexities and difficulties of leading mission critical systems projects.

The design and implementation of highly available disaster-tolerant and mission critical systems requires a more disciplined approach to systems engineering than is common in the IT industry. To successfully design and deliver mission critical systems it is important to have a sound understanding of technology, to provide technical leadership and to communicate effectively in order to guide the project through to successful completion.

Jürgen Depping is a Co-Founder of the CommitWork GmbH and responsible for the new technology part. Specially using Java on HP-NonStop server and has been responsible for the design of CommitWork's OmnivoTribe. Always interested in modernizing and combining new modern technology with legacy software systems.

Since 2004, he is the leader of the GTUG Java SIG.
